When the pandemic upended school routines, the federal government began funding school meal programs nationwide, in effect making meals free for every child. After federal funding was revoked in 2022, advocates in states across the nation fought to pass legislation that would continue universal free meal programs, ensuring kids had access to nutritious meals, and helping end lunch room shame.
